Young Promoters

Empowering young people to choose and promote a professional theatre or dance show in their school or a local venue

The Young Promoters scheme enables young people to choose and promote a professional theatre or dance show in their school or a local venue.

Through the scheme we give young people the responsibility and credit they deserve by letting them make all of the decisions whilst they work through the project. They are in control throughout the project – we let them do it themselves.

What are the aims of Young Promoters?

Black Country Touring’s Young Promoters Scheme is an early intervention project addressing the limited opportunities for children and young people aged 5-18 to experience professional performing arts in the Black Country.

The Department for Education believes character and resilience are as crucial to young people’s future success as academic qualifications.

Their vision is for young people to be able to:

  • Believe they can achieve.

  • Stick with the task in hand.

  • See the link between effort today and the future.

  • Be able to bounce back from knocks in life.

What do Young Promoters do?

Young Promoters are fully immersed in decision making right from the start – which show to promote, when to put it on, where to hold the show, start times, the price of tickets etc. The children are in control, and this ownership brings with it a huge amount of pride. The show is theirs, they are in control, and they feel grown up. The skills they develop, without being aware, are fully transferable into the wider world.

“I see first hand the positive impact BCT young promoters events have on the individual students, in developing their self esteem and bringing the whole school together, including their families and friends. It’s a valuable asset, which enables events to be held locally and at an affordable price.”

— Maggie Nock, Science Coordinator at Penn Hall School

“Without opportunities such as these the students who took part in the Young Promoters scheme would never have had an opportunity to work on a large project, take on the roles they have or ever be given this level of responsibility. It is a fantastic structure to offer students real life experience of jobs within the arts that are hidden and expose the diversity of talents that are needed behind the scene.”

FAQs

What are the costs?

This depends on the show that the Young Promoters choose. We have a menu of shows available for promoters to book. BCT subsidises the cost of the show so that the ticket prices can be kept low and affordable. The majority of YP groups make a profit from their events.

What are the required resources?

A group of young people (max 30) and a dedicated group leader to work with the group and help guide them through the project from start to finish (approx. 6 months).

Who is the scheme for?

The scheme is suitable for:

  • KS1 – KS4

  • SEN Schools

  • Higher Education Settings

  • Youth Groups

“Many children who would not normally believe they have the ability or confidence to take part in any event have learnt otherwise.”

— Teacher Feedback
