Tales of Orisa

By iycat

Tales of Orisa explores the ancient characters of the Yoruba Pantheon, using specially commissioned videos, text, dance and the musical dexterity of the Sacred Funk 4tet.

The project began as a collaboration with The University of Birmingham’s African Collection, looking at their Yoruba Artefacts and is accompanied by a community discussion around how these should be made more accessible to people in the West Midlands.

The Sacred Funk 4tet personnel represents different genres, cultures and generations! With twice Grammy Award winner Lekan Babalola on percussion, acclaimed clarinettist Kate Luxmoore, rising star Reuben Reynolds on guitar and emerging talent Josh Vadiveloo on Bass. The Orisa music is ancient and sacred, explored through the African Diaspora lens of highlife, mento and rumba, hip hop, to name a few, which is reflected in the dance interpretation.

With the beautiful visual design of Lagos artist Lanre Lawal as a backdrop, Tales of Orisa has enthralled and uplifted audiences from 8-80!

(Please note the touring version will feature just one dancer.)
